Welcome,

I am pleased to welcome you to the Brookfield School website.  As a small K-6 school in central Vermont, we are proud of the fine educational experiences we are able to provide our community’s young people.  As you navigate this site, please keep in mind that to fully understand the wonderful, community nature of this school, you really do need to visit and spend some time getting to know us better.  We encourage you to visit and ask that you give us a call to set up a time.

As principal, I would like to share with you some basic beliefs that may help you to better understand our staff, our school and our commitment to education.

  • Education must focus on the respect for human diversity, uniqueness of individuals and the development of a love for learning and knowledge.  We must acknowledge our local communities as a resource and inspiration for this journey as we all work together to provide a full range of educational opportunities.  An atmosphere of mutual trust and support is critical to help all students realize their educational dreams.
  • Education is a cooperative effort involving the school, the home and the community.  We are all learners and teachers, and as such must look at education as a life-long process.
  • All students have the need to feel responsible, valued and able.  Schools should be flexible enough to allow each student to regularly experience success and realize his or her potential.
  • Each student should acquire a well defined, but ever-changing body of basic knowledge.  Problem solving, decision making, communication, critical thinking and human interaction skills as well as cultural, technological and environmental literacy must be considered part of the basic curriculum.
  • Educational decisions must always be judged first by what is in the best interest of the child.  Whenever possible, decisions should be based upon best practice research and supported by local data analysis.
  • Instruction should be differentiated and take advantage of differences in how students learn and the ways teachers teach.  The content and form of learning experiences should match identified stages of social, emotional and cognitive development.
  • A school’s staff should model warm and caring relationships toward students and other staff members.  The school environment should be stimulating and create an atmosphere that encourages discovery, creativity and learning through experience.  We must all communicate high expectations in all areas of school life.

Sincerely,

Scott O. Kalter
Principal
