Message from the Principal

elijah and catyWelcome to Randolph Union High School

Dear RU Community Members:

I just wanted to write a short summer message as we close out what was a busy, challenging, but very fulfilling year here at RU Middle and High School.
It was wonderful to see so many of you at our closing ceremonies in June, including our 8th grade passage ceremony, senior awards night, RTCC recognition night and RU graduation. It was a wonderful conclusion to a meaningful year.

It was especially meaningful to read aloud our graduates’ post-secondary plans at graduation, and to see that so many of our graduates have made thoughtful plans for next year and beyond.  Some are taking “gap years” to travel or work before going on to college; others are joining the workforce right now, some leveraging their LNAs and other certifications gained during high school; others are heading off to two and four year colleges in Vermont and all over the country.  Like in past years, there are RU graduates who have been accepted to some of North America’s most competitive colleges and universities – including, this year, Bard College, Virginia Tech, and McGill University.

As I mentioned in my graduation remarks, it is a challenge and sometimes a struggle for a small school to meet the diverse needs of its community’s children - but it is a struggle that is worth the effort.  It is a labor that brings so many good fruits.

I think sometimes that one of the ceremonies that gets a little lost in the busyness of the end-of-year activities is the 8th grade passage ceremony. When you get a moment, take a few minutes and watch this video reflecting some of the thoughts and impressions of our eighth graders. I think you’ll be impressed.

Finally, I am very excited to introduce Caty Sutton to you as RU’s new Assistant Principal. Some of you may remember Caty from her years here as a teacher, but I expect most of you know her from her work over the past several years overseeing Senior Project and building and developing our Project Based Learning program.

Caty brings not only a great deal of knowledge and experience to her new position, but also wisdom, compassion, and understanding.  I am very much looking forward to working side by side with her in the coming year. And speaking of the coming year, the last thing I want to do is rush the summer…especially here in Vermont…but I’m already looking ahead to what I know will be a rich and exciting school year.

In the meantime, we have a lot of planning and preparation to do (not to mention cleaning, hence the summer attire!).  See you in late August.
