Randolph Union High School has a new State Champion in Snowboard Giant Slalom - that title now belongs to sophomore, Ethan Farmer.
After a phenomenal regular season and sitting in first place in points, Ethan competed in Thursday’s state snowboarding contest at Okemo Mountain. There, Ethan placed 1st overall in the giant slalom competition & was also named State Runner-Up for “overall snowboarder” (which combines scores in all 3 snowboarding disciplines - Giant slalom, Halfpipe, and Slopestyle). Here, he placed 1st in giant slalom, 3rd in the half pipe, and 5th in Slopestyle.
Ethan overcame a great deal of adversity to claim the top spot among all athletes in Vermont. The snowboard Ethan had used all season long broke a week before the state contest, so he was riding a very different board during Thursday’s state event. His boots also had to be duct taped shut, because the tightening system failed as he was putting them on just before his first competition.
Adversity, determination, grit, visualization. All demonstrated with supreme focus & a hunger to successfully earn his rightful place atop the podium. Congratulations, Ethan Farmer – RU’s newest state champion! A proud day to be a Ghost!!
Congratulations to the varsity bowling team!
The team competed at Twin City Lanes in Barre! Earning a first-round bye, the #2 seed Ghosts posted a perfect 4-game victory in the quarter-finals over #7 Burlington. In the semi-finals, Randolph was returned the favor by #3 seed Essex in 4-straight games (2 of those games, however, were decided by 7 pins or less). Kolby Carpenter will represent Randolph next Saturday 3.10 as a member of Vermont's Senior Classic team where the top 10 senior bowlers from Vermont take on New Hampshire's Top 10 senior athletes.
Congrats to RU Wrestlers!
Congratulations to members of the Randolph Middle School & JV wrestling team who competed on Saturday, February 17 at the Vermont State Meet. In a phenomenal set of matches, every Randolph wrestler placed on the day! Taking 6th place honors - Owen Schultz & Landin Holdbrook. Matthew Smith earned 3rd place, while Kody Grout, Colby Grout, and Reagan Papp all earned runners-up finishes. Coy Lyford won a middle school state title while Bryce Thamert won a JV state title. Best of luck to all those competing at New Englands in a few weeks."
Kaplan Wins Second Title; Breaks RUHS Record in Track & Field
RU Athletics congratulates Isaac Kaplan for a phenomenally well-run 3000m race on Friday evening, February 9, at the University of Vermont. Making a defining surge with four laps remaining, Kaplan sealed the Division II Indoor Track & Field State Title - his second in 2 years in that distance. He also set a new Randolph Union school record, posting a time of 9:27.11, qualifying him for the New England Track &Field meet on March 3 at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston, MA. Congratulations, Isaac!
The RU varsity gymnastics team brought the season to a close on Saturday at the state championships in Essex, coming in 8th with a combined event team score of 105.825, five points higher than their season average. Judging is often stricter and the pressure and competition tougher at the state meet but the Ghost gymnasts persevered to improve nearly all individual scores across the four events. CVU took the top team honors this year with a 142.325, ending a long streak of dominating championship wins by home team Essex Hornets.
In a sport where every hesitation and misstep decreases the score, precision and confidence is key. Throughout the season, RU’s four strong all around athletes modeled consistency and bravery as they added new moves and refined current skills. Senior Krystin Skoda will be missed next year as she steadily improved her scores, especially on vault, scoring a 6.55, over a point higher than her season average. Juniors Lilly Myrick and Courtney Clement scored 8.05 and 8.0 on balance beam, leading their team to place 6th in the beam scores, and achieving the 17th and 18th highest scores of the state meet in beam. Finally, freshman Makayla Clement had a strong start to her varsity career, averaging 25 points for the team at each meet and bringing her total to 26 at the state meet.
The event specialists on the team can always be counted on to set a strong tone for each event. Sophomore Olivia Campbell is recovering from a sprained ankle and the team missed her on beam and floor at the state meet. Freshman Yelena Merriam started the Ghosts off on floor with strong leaps and graceful dance while classmates Phoebe Hickin started the team on bars and followed Isabell Graham on beam. The six freshmen members of the team look forward to expanding their event expertise next season with routines that include more of the varsity requirements. Christin Nolan will add a floor routine to an already impressive beam routine and Mackenzie McLendon will refine floor and beam routines.
Freshman Ella Tallman, competing as an independent gymnast for Sharon Academy, had a successful season as a varsity freshman as well. To be eligible for participation in the state meet, an independent gymnast must compete in at least five regular season meets. Ella improved her combined vault, beam and floor scores by nearly two points in the state meet, scoring season highs of 5.9 on floor and 6.4 on beam.
With so many eighth graders moving on to join the varsity team as freshman, RU’s middle school gymnastics team, made of 7th graders Vivvy Davis, Rosa Barden, Beatrice Lake, Liz St. Denis, Autumn Smith, Aleah Murawski, Amelia Mather, and Aiden Lopez-Nolet, along with Whitcomb independent Claire Allen traveled to Middlebury last Friday to compete in the middle school state championship. The young team posted a fifth place score of 114.7 and boasted several individual medals and ribbons. The Middlebury Tigers took first place with a 128.45, closely followed by the South Burlington Wolves with a 127.9.
Second year team members Vivvy Davis and Rosa Barden did well on all events, placing nearly every time. Davis took 6th on vault and bars and 7th on beam, leading her to place 6th in the all around. Barden followed in 7th on bars and 9th on floor, for another strong all around finish. Teammate Liz St. Denis came out strong on vault for a 9th place ribbon while Beatrice Lake placed 13th on floor. Claire Allen took 13th on beam and looks forward to adding a bar routine for an all around score next season.
With all team members planning to return next year, the middle school team can’t wait to hit the ground running and improve on their experience this year!
